EuroVelo at the world's leading tourism fair
As reported in the last newsletter, EuroVelo will have Its own booth at the ITB
Berlin, the world’s leading tourism trade fair. The EuroVelo/ECF booth can
be found In Hall 4.1 at Booth #218 every day from 10:00-18:00.
We are available for meetings from Wednesday to Sunday. Please contact

EuroVelo 15 - Rhein Route will also be represented at the fair at the booth of
'Cologne-Düsseldorf-Bonn’ In Hall 8.2 (#103).
On Thursday (08/03/12) Allgemelner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club (ADFC), the
National EuroVelo Coordination Centre for Germany, are hosting a number of
events related to cycling tourism In Germany and Austria, which may be of
wider Interest.

Route Development
Transnational Route Development Projects Prepare
Action Plans
Duringthe autumn, the partners working on the three Transnational
Route Development Projects co-financed by DG ENTR (EuroVelo 3 - St
James Way, EuroVelo 13 - Iron Curtían Trail North and EuroVelo 13 -
Iron Curtain Trail Central) prepared National Action Plans. These were
based on the results of the site visits and workshops that were under-
taken In the summer. Each action plan provides detailed Information
on what Is required In order to 'complete’ the route In each country,
Including construction works, surface Improvement, signposting, main-
tenance and monitoring. They also consider the need for services,
marketing/promotion and organisation.
For both EuroVelo 3 and EuroVelo 13, a combined transnational ac-
tion plan was then compiled for the whole route. These were presen-
ted at the EuroVelo Workshops held In Brussels at the start of Decem-
ber to signify the end of the one-year projects. It Is hoped that al-
though these projects have ended, ¡twill just be the beginning of the
road for the two routes, as the action plans provide a blueprint for
what still needs to be done.

Spectacular New Viaduct and Tunnel constructed on
EuroVelo 1 in England
A brand new 300 metre long walking/ cycling viaduct Is being built
near Tavistock, Devon on part of EuroVelo 1 (National Cycle Network
Route 27). It will be known as "Gem Bridge" and crosses the River
Walkham near Grenofen, where It will open up a traffic-free section of
the EuroVelo 1 / NCN27 route which Is currently on road. The picture
shows the last span being winched Into place.
There will also be another traffic-free section of the route opening
thanks to the purchase of a disused railway tunnel by Devon County
Council nearby. The "Grenofen Tunnel" was built In 1859 by the fa-
mous British Engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunei but has been closed
for 50 years. It Is being re-opened with a cycle route through It, again
as part of EuroVelo 1 / NCN27. This picture was taken before any
work was started. It Is expected to open In the Spring.
The viaduct and tunnel, combined with connecting paths, will add
26kms of traffic-free cycling route.

Spread the news: kick off meeting for new EuroVelo 3 pro-
ject held in Norway
The Swedish and Norwegian parts of EuroVelo 3 - The Pilgrims Route were
not included In last years’ EU-funded project; however, In Norway a new pro-
ject aiming to Implement the route Is now In the pipeline.
Statens Vegvesen, which Is the Public Roads Administration In Norway - and
now also confirmed as the National EuroVelo Coordination Centre - organi-
sed a kick off meeting on the 18th October In Otta, a small town located
between Oslo and Trondheim.
Henrik Duus of the Public Roads Administration opened the meeting and
explained the background for the national routes In Norway and the role of
his organisation. The national route number 7 Is planned to go from Halden
at the Swedish border, through Oslo and up to Trondheim, where the Nlda-
ros church Is a famous pilgrims destination like Rome, Jerusalem and San-
tiago de Compostela. This Is also the Itinerary proposed for the EuroVelo 3.
Heidi Brlml from the national pilgrims centre In Trondheim spoke about the
already existing pilgrims route for people walking and how popular pilgrims
trails have become In Norway.
Jens Erik Larsen from Forenlngen Frie Fugle (and member of EuroVelo Coun-
cil) presented impressions from the EuroVelo 3 In the other countries and
gave his experiences of plannlngthe exact Itinerary for such routes.
The meeting had more than 20 participants representing local, regional and
national authorities. The good atmosphere and Interesting discussions can
hopefully start a process to Implement this Important part of EuroVelo 3.
