Artxibo OCRECF EuroVelo Newsletter 6 oh EuroVeLo the European cycle route network EUROPEAN CYCLISTS' FEDERATION Technology Issue The internet, smart phones, GPS and applications are increasingly becoming important tools for anyone planning a cycling holiday or just to figure out the best route for a local trip. To highlight this growing trend, we thought that we would prepare a special Technology Issue, starting with the first dedicated EuroVelo website. EuroVelo.org goes live! After months of planning, www.EuroVelo.org - the website for profes- sionals working on the EuroVelo routes - went live on Tuesday 15th November. The website aims to provide advice, guidance, tips and tools for all those individuals and organisations working with ECF to develop the European cycle route network, EuroVelo. The website includes examples of best practice, useful guidance and manuals, resources for the National EuroVelo Coordination Centres / Coordinators and pages related to the various Route Development Projects. There will also be forums where it will be possible to inte- ract with the ECF and others working on the EuroVelo routes across the continent. SAT ION ROU TES DOWNLOADS EORUM CONIAC I The website also Includes the EuroVelo Overview Route Database, which for the first time will enable us to have an up-to-date summary of the condition of every section of every EuroVelo route. The ECF will be worklngwlth the National EuroVelo Coordination Centres and Coor- dinators and other partners to add data to this database. The website Is the latest achievement in the EuroVelo central coordi- nation project, which Is co-flnanced by the European Union under the preparatory action 'Sustainable Tourism'. It Is hoped that this year work can commence on developing EuroVe- lo.com, a website promoting the EuroVelo network to the wider public. This project is co-financed by the European Union under the preparatory action "Sustainable Tourism”. The sole responsibility of this publication lies with the author. We thought that we would focus on some of best examples that we have seen. UK Sustrans has recently launched an App for iPhones - The complete National Cycle Net- work ’. The new App gives people access to over 25,000 miles (40,250 km) of walking and cycling routes across the UK and is free to download. The App shows the EuroVelo routes in the UK; provides links to the Transport Direct journey planning website (making it easier to get bus and train updates from any location); and recommends routes for easy local travel as well as more long-distance ones for leisure walks and rides. It also lets you record and keep a GPS track of your route as you walk or ride along, centring the map on your current location. The latest route developments and additions to the National Cycle Network will be up- dated fortnightly. As well as a great travel tool, the App is also fantastic for everyday use to find out what local areas have to offer - highlighting local shops, schools, sports centres, places of interest as well as information on car clubs, bike shops and public transport interchanges. It is hoped that an Android version will also be available soon. For more information, please view here: http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ The Netherlands In the Netherlands, the Dutch National Cycling Platform (National Foundation Fietsplat- form) have produced the Meldsystem App, which enables you to quickly and easily re- port missing or damaged signs on the national cycle network. The app is available for Android and the iPhone: http://meldsvsteem.nederlandfietsland.nl/ Czech Republic A new innovative guide to Bohemian and Moravian viticulture has been developed for mobile phones, which includes suggestions for wine cycling trails! There is extensive information on the mobile guide in both Czech and English and yet it is only 0.5MB and downloading takes only a few seconds. In the mobile guide you will find: • A map of Czech viticulture regions • details about Moravian regions • details about Bohemian regions • The history of winery in the Czech Republic • categories of Czech wine (still, sparkling, carbonated, liqueur, table, country, quality and more) • a list of white wines • a list of red wines • detailed description of each wine with images of the grapes and their basic cha- racteristics The free guide suggests that if you use the guide you can become a real sommelier!
