New National EuroVelo Coordination Centres and Coordi-
nators
In August three applications to become National EuroVelo Coordination Cen-
tres or Coordinators have been approved. Since then a further 16 other
applications and formal agreements have now been signed with these or-
ganisations. The network of National EuroVelo Coordination Centres / Coor-
dinators therefore now consists of:

EuroVelo Council Member Jens Erik Larsen reports on
the Bicistaffetta tour
It is that time of year when, to beat the Winter blues, people start thin-
king about their cycle holidays. Italy Is a popular destination with cycle
tourists with Its mix of good weather, fine food and stunning countrysi-
de. In September last year, EuroVelo Council Member Jens Erik Lar-
sen took part In Bicistaffetta - an annual tour held to publicise Italy’s
bicycle routes - and here he recounts his experiences:
Last year I had the pleasure to participate In Bicistaffetta, a bicycle trip
organised by FIAB, the Italian cyclists’ federation. The 345 km route
passed between Verona to Livorno and there were around 50-60 parti-
cipants, many wearing red, white and green t-shirts and with flags at-
tached to their bikes! Along the way, we met with representatives of
local authorities (Including several mayors) because one of the objecti-
ves of the tour Is to convince local decision-makers of the benefits of
Investing In bicycle tourism and In particular the national cycle net-
work, Blcltalla, and the EuroVelo routes In Italy.
The trip actually Involved 3 EuroVelo routes: EuroVelo 7 crossing north
- south In Mantova, EuroVelo 8 followlngthe course of the River Po
and EuroVelo 5 comlngfrom Milano and down to Vlaregglo. This part
was actually signed as Via Franclgena - a pilgrims route which Is the
popular theme of the route.
Most of the routes followed the national cycle route Blcltalla 16 and
new signs were Inaugurated durlngthe tour. Several meetings during
the trip showed that the local authorities were positive about develo-
ping cycle routes, especially the European ones, In spite of the tough
economic climate. Between the two Unesco World Heritage towns
Mantova and Sabbloneta, a special “Percorso Unesco" route was Inau-
gurated.
At the end of the trip, a conference took place at the theatre of Livor-
no. I gave a presentation on EuroVelo and there were other presenta-
tions on Blcltalla (by Claudio Pedronl of FIAB) and several local pro-
jects In Livorno.
In general, the Bicistaffetta seemed to be a good way to make cycling
visible and to push the authorities to do something about It - and at
the same time have good company and fresh air.

EuroVelo will have its own stand at ITB Berlin for the first
time
The ITB Berlin Is the world’s leading travel trade show and for the first time
EuroVelo will have Its own stand there. As well as providing an opportunity
to promote the EuroVelo routes to the trade and the general public, It will
also be fantastic opportunity for networking because It Is the largest gather-
ing of tourism organisations In the world and many of the most Influential
figures In the Industry will be present. Of course, the EuroVelo routes are
not only for use by tourists but they are likely to be an Important user group
for most parts of the network.
