European Tourism Policy and central EuroVelo
coordination
The members of the EuroVelo Council met on 15-16th of February in Brus-
sels and discussed the latest results and the planned activities related to
the Central EuroVelo Coordination Project. In order to provide effective na

tional coordination they accepted the ECF publishing a manual and an appli-
cation form for EuroVelo national coordination centres and a simplified call
for coordinators (open until the 20th of June in the first round).
EuroVelo and Cycling tourism on the ITB-Berlin
ECF Secretary-General, Bernhard Ensink and ECF EuroVelo Manager, Adam
Bodor presented the current situation of the EuroVelo Network and manage-
ment at the ITB Travel Trade Show in Berlin in front of 30 German experts.
The participants were especially interested in improving European EuroVelo
coordination and the participants discussed the development of the national
long distance cycle route coordination along two selected routes: The Rhein
route (EV15) and the Iron Curtain Trail (EV13). The presentation and Work-
shop was hosted by the ADFC event (mentioned later under the national
coordinator section of this newsletter).

Denmark
The Austrian ministries (BMWFJ and BMLFUW), as well as its prov-
inces, public transport providers, NGO's and experts (Including our
national EuroVelo Coordinator - Mr Christian Weinberger) created a
national working group for cycling tourism, which can serve as a basis
for further organizational developments. They organized their latest
meeting on 4th of March 2011, In Klagenfurt, Karlntla together with a
cycling mobility working group with more than 30 participants from all
over Austria Including ECF Eurovelo Manager, Adam Bodor. Dr. Josef
Martinz gave a greeting on behalf of the Province of Karlntla. The par
tlclpants discussed EuroVelo route developments, potential target
markets, further cooperation with the federal railways, and quality
criteria for cycling friendly services on the federal level.

This year In Denmark, the Forenlngen Frie Fugle (the first EV national
coordinator organisation for Denmark) has received fundlngfrom Min-
istry of Transport to propose Improvements Including Itinerary changes
which would result In more people cycllngthe route. The project In-
volves significant cooperation with the City of Copenhagen and
Syddansk Turlsme and also Involves EuroVelo routes 7 and 10. Con-
cerning policy developments, they managed to change the Danish
Road Standards and Guidelines In 2009, so that the EuroVelo logo
can be used In Denmark. The logo will be put on Its own plate beneath
the sign of the national route.

Germany
The ADFC, Germany’s national EuroVelo and cycling tourism coordinator,
presented its latest report on cycling tourism at the ITB in Berlin. On the
top list of the German cycle routes in 2010 we can find once again the
Elbe route, followed by the Main, Weser and Rhein route. Among the
foreign routes the Danube, Etsch and Inn routes are favourites among
the German cyclists, but they still rank Switzerland, South-Tirol the high-
est among the destinations, and are expecting high interest in routes in
France and Austria in 2011. The ADFC experts introduced the new na-
tional promotion map (8th edition) and reported on the development of
the Bett & Bike System (which has a new logo and has reached 5.100
members). The very promising pilot project D-Route 3, was presented by
the German Tourism Federation. More information can be found here.
Route Development
Rhein-route EuroVelo 15-Market analysis report completed
DEMARRAGE project partners received the Market Analysis Report on
22nd of February Wiesbaden The aim of the Market Analysis Report was
to evaluate the potential of the transnational cycle market in general
and the Rhine Cycle Route as an existing product. Based on the analy-
sis, the Rhine Cycle Route can use its potential to become one of the
leading European cycle routes if it succeeds in becoming a premium
product for bicycle tourists.
