European Tourism policy and central EuroVelo co-
ordination
New political framework and implementation plan for
tourism in Europe
In its Communication "Europe, the world's No 1 tourist destination - a
new political framework for tourism in Europe" of 30th June 2010, the
European Commission highlighted its tourism policy and proposed a set
of actions which should be implemented, in the medium-term, in close
cooperation with all tourism stakeholders at all levels. The Commission
presented (at the European Tourism Forum in Malta on 18th-19th No-
vember 2010) the draft implementation plan, which outlines the most
important actions to be performed and identifies the key players for eve-
ry action, without, however being, exhaustive. It also proposes a timefra-
me for carrying out the actions. The ECF proposes to integrate the Euro-
pean cycle route network - EuroVelo as the perfect tool for developing
European tourism, in the implementation plan, and we ask our partners
to support this idea.
European Parliament and DG ENTR supports the cen-
tral EuroVelo coordination
Based on the success of the Iron Curtain Trail awarness raising work-
shops and lobby work carried out together with Michael Cramer
(Member of the European Parliament), the European Parliament alloca-
ted 600 000 Euro from its budget for 2010 to cofinance EuroVelo rela-
ted, long-distance cycle route projects (EV13 - Iron Curtain Trail. EV3 -
St James route, and central EuroVelo coordination). The DG Enterprise
Tourism Unit published a call for proposals at the end of june 2010 and
the ECF applied succesfully (together with the CTC. ADFC and the Czech
Environmental Partnership Fundation) to elaborate a common EuroVelo
Strategy - Programme with the ELI, to define the basic concept of a po-
tential European “Bett&Bike” system, and to have the first complete
overview database about the European cycle route network (EuroVelo).
Duringthe project in 2011 the following public events are expected:
• 10th March 2011. - ITB Berlin - European cycling tourism work-
shop together with the ADFC
• 22nd March 2011,- Sevilla, Spain - the first full day national Eu-
roVelo coordinators / coordination centres meeting
• 25th March 2011,- Sevilla, Spain - EuroVelo workshop and pre-
sentations duringthe Velo-citv conference.
• May and September 2011 - Strategic EuroVelo planning work-
shops (the exact date will be announced later, information will be
available at www.EuroVelo.org)

National coordination
First EuroVelo signposting in the UK
Sustrans implemented its first EuroVelo signposting in the UK in
Wales, on the EuroVelol and EuroVelo2 routes, as part of the National
Cycle Network. The stylish signs and columns are not only practical
but attractive too. Congratulations!
EuropeMobility from Switzerland
The SwitzerlandMobilitv Foundation, one of the best (EuroVelo) na-
tional coordination centres, has prepared and published a set of pres-
entations and a draft manual showing the Swiss integrated approach
to coordination and promotion. SwitzerlandMobilitv Foundation is pre-
pared to share its experience with similar European bodies and to fur-
ther develop the strategy with them. It hopes that other countries will
also have success with it. More information is available on the
EuropeMobility website.
The publication of EuroVelo Newsletter is supported by
The church Village Bypass was opened in August
2010. It runs for some 6Km between Cross Inn and
Ton-teg. The Community Route was built at the sa-
me time as the bypass and runs for the length of
the scheme. It also forms part of a wider network of
cycleways which includes the following:
*The Valleys Cycle Network: Abergavenny to Kidwel-
ly;
*National Cycle Route 4: Greenwich to Abergwaun
(Fishguard);
*EuroVelo Bike Route 1: North Cape (Norway) to
Sagres (Portugal)
In addition, EuroVelo Bike Route 2 also runs nearby
and connects Galway (Ireland) to Moscow (Russia).

EuroVelo15 - Rhine route
Developing the transnational economic potential embedded in the terri-
torial assets of the Rhine corridor - this is the overall aim of the DEMAR-
RAGE project for the development of the Rhine route. In order to achieve
our goal, the project team will design the organisational framework to
jointly handle the Rhine cycle route, implement a marketing programme
and initiate business cooperation on a transnational scale. The ECF
EuroVelo newsletter will report to you on every important result and
event related to this three-year project, cofinanced by Interreg IVB, North
-West Europe. You can find the first newsletter with detailed news about
the project on our website in English, German, French and Dutch.

EuroVelo13 - Iron Curtain Trail

The central section includes Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Slo-
vakia and Hungary, and the consortium Is led by the Environmental Part-
nership for Sustainable Development. The kick-off meeting was held In
Bratislava (Slovakia) on 11th and 12th January 2011. To set the level of
the work, at the beginning of the meeting the Chairman of Bratislava
Region, Pavol Freso, described the ambitious cycling developments In
the region.
The northern section Involves Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland,
Sweden and Germany. The consortium Is led by the Pomeranian Asso-
ciation “Common Europe", which organised the first transnational meet-
ing In Gdansk (Poland) on 26th January 2011. The meeting was held In
the gorgeous premises of the New City Hall of Gdansk. Besides the Inter-
national team, the professionals of the local governments were also rep-
resented.

In two projects to prepare the development of the Central European and
North European sections of the EuroVelol3 - Iron Curtain Trail. Both
projects will define the necessary tasks and responsible organisations In
the frame of a transnational action plan, supported by data collection,
and national and transnational events.
