Better laws?
Legislation for road safety can be defined as “comprehensive” if the existing
national and sub-national road safety laws include the following key laws:
1) a national speed limit law
2) a national drink-driving law
3) a national motorcycle helmet law
4) a national seat-belt law (front and rear seats)

25th annlversary of seatbelts - 60,000 Uves saved
Published: Thursday, 31 lanuary 2008
Tvventy ñve years oí seatbelt wearing lavvs have helped save 60,000 lives, Road Safety Minister Jim
Fitzpatnck revealed today.
Seatbcits havc prevcnted an estimatcd 80,<KK5 deatM and 670,000 serious Injuries since 31 January 1983 when seatbelts were made
mandatory for drivers and front seat passengers.
But on Uie 25th anniversary of the law cbange all passengers are being remlnded lo beli up in the back as weil as tbe froni. New
research shows 9 out of 10 people agree It is dangerous to travel in the back oí a car without a seatbeit but only 7 In 10 adults actually
wear belts wben sttting in the back.
Jim Fitzpatrick said:
Tens oí thousands of Uves have been saved since the first law on wearing seatbelts was introduced 25 years ago. Government
campaigns havc helped increase the numbers of pcopie wearing seatbelts to more than 90% for drívers and front seat passengers but
too many back seat passengers are still noc beiiing up.
"Wiih up to IS drivers and froni seat passengers killed each year by the impact of an unbelted rear seat passenger It is vital that
everyone • young or oíd, travellirtg In the front or back - wears a sealbelL"
The Department for Transport is undertaking a major research project into the use of and altitudes towards seatbelts and will use the
findings to inform a new seatbelts campaign which wlll launch towards the end of 2008.

DfT Celebrates 25th Anniversary of the introduction of seatbelts
On the 31 st January 2008, the 25th anniversary of the law change
which made front seatbeit wearing compulsory was celebrated.
PACTS itself was set up by Barry Sheerman MP as part of the fight to
get mandatory seatbeit wearing turned into legislation. Eightyears
later it became compulsory for all backseat passengers to use
seatbelts and it is estimated that since the introduction of the first law
change in 1983, seatbelts have orevented 60.000 deaths and over
670,000 serious injuries.
